October Newsletter

October 1, 2026

Hello Thunderbolt Family!

Dear Families,

Happy October! We are so grateful for your continued partnership and active involvement in our school community.

Reflecting on Back to School Night
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Back to School Night! It was wonderful seeing our hallways and classrooms filled with your energy and enthusiasm. Attending events like this plays a vital role in your child’s educational journey—it builds strong relationships with teachers, helps you stay connected to classroom expectations, and shows your student that their education is a shared priority between home and school.

Attendance Matters & Monthly Incentives
Consistent attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of student success. Every school day offers crucial opportunities for learning, growth, and social connection. Missing even a few days can make it harder for students to stay on track. Our goal is to have a school-wide average attendance of 97% or higher per month. For September, we were at 94%. We are hopeful that this will improve for October.

To help build strong attendance habits, we are excited to continue our Attendance Incentives:

  • Attendance Challenge: Classes with a 95% or higher average attendance for the week will receive a letter. The goal is to spell PRESENT, and once a classroom completes the word, they will receive a sweet treat.
  • Individual Certificates: Students who demonstrate outstanding or improved attendance will receive individual certificates to celebrate their dedication!
Please help us by ensuring your child arrives on time each day ready to learn.

Strengthening the Home-School Connection
When school and home work together, students thrive. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or our administration whenever you need guidance, resources, or support. Open communication creates a strong bridge between home and school, ensuring every student has the tools and encouragement they need to succeed both academically and emotionally.

Monthly Events & Calendar Reminder
We have an exciting month ahead! Be sure to review our calendar of events below. The events can also be found on the school website/newsletter so you don't miss out on upcoming family nights, spirit days, and schoolwide gatherings.

Focusing on Kindness
Finally, as we move through the school year, we continue to emphasize the core value of kindness. We encourage you to talk with your child at home about what it means to be kind—whether that’s welcoming a new classmate, offering a helping hand, or using encouraging words. Small acts of kindness create a safe, warm, and positive environment for everyone.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication to our school community and your children's success.

Warmly,
Branden Grange
Principal

ParentSquare

ParentSquare is the communication platform we use frequently. You can set your preferences on how and when you receive messages through the website or the app. We highly recommend downloading the ParentSquare app. If you need help with ParentSquare, please stop by the office.

Popcorn Sales

PTA is selling popcorn every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Popcorn is $1 and will be sold at dismissal time. All proceeds go to the PTA to support any school needs.

Update

Wednesday Dismissals - NEW INFORMATION

We will be using another gate for dismissals only on Wednesdays for our 4th and 5th graders who have Mrs. Camarena, Mrs. Gomez, or Mr. Gonzalez. Students who get picked up or walk home will exit through the cafeteria gate. We will have a campus assistant at the exit to support with a safe dismissal. We are hopeful that the additional exit will help with traffic and congestion.

Important Reminders

Entrances: We have two gates available for students when coming onto campus. One is along Clara Street, and the other is along North 3rd Street (cafeteria gate). Gates open at 7:35 am and close promptly at 8:00 am. Classes begin at 8:00 am.
*Breakfast is in the cafeteria, and it is free for all students between 7:35 am and 7:50 am.

Office Hours: The office is open daily from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Dismissal: TK students are dismissed from their classrooms (Rooms K1 and K2).
Kindergarten - 2nd graders are dismissed from the Clara Street gate.
3rd - 5th graders are dismissed from the gate (flag pole gate) between the office and the cafeteria gate. Please see the update above regarding Wednesday dismissal for 4th and 5th graders.

All students who are registered for our afterschool program (SHINE) will be walked by an instructor to a designated area. SHINE will be operating the first day of school for the families who have signed their child up to attend and got confirmation of their enrollment.

*Parents who are late for dismissal will need to go to the office to pick up their child.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off

As we work together to keep our dismissal and arrival times smooth and safe for all students, please keep the following guidelines in mind for drop-off and pick-up:

  • Stay in Your Vehicle in the Parking Lot: The school parking lot is strictly designated for quick drop-off and pick-up where drivers remain inside their vehicles; this is only for the parking lot near the office and the Clara Street gate. Please don't drop off students from the parking lot near the cafeteria gate.
  • Park on Nearby Streets to Walk: If you need to exit your vehicle—whether to help your child, walk them directly to the gate, or meet them at dismissal—please park along one of the designated nearby streets off-campus.
Keeping foot traffic out of the active parking lot lanes ensures a clear line of sight for drivers and helps protect all of our students. Thank you for your cooperation and for keeping our school community safe!

SHINE Program

Hueneme offers a free after-school program (SHINE and Catalyst). The SHINE program is composed of different components, including homework support, theater, and a variety of classes (cooking, STEM, art, sewing, and dance). Enrollment packets can be picked up in the office. SHINE and Catalyst will begin the first day of school for parents who have enrolled their student in the program and received confirmation.
