“Hueneme” (pronounced Y NEE MEE) comes from a Chumash Indian word for “resting place.” Our families live in Port Hueneme and Oxnard, including unincorporated Silver Strand and Channel Islands Harbor neighborhoods.
Hueneme ESD educates approximately 8,000 kindergarten through eighth grade students in nine elementary schools and two junior high schools. We have a close relationship with Naval Base Ventura County and work hard to meet the unique needs of our military families.
Currently, the demographic of students in our district is 80 percent Hispanic, 8.6 percent Caucasian, 5.3 percent Filipino, 2.9 percent African American, .05 percent Asian, .06 percent Pacific Islander, and .3 percent American Indian. Approximately 51.8 percent of our students are limited English-speaking or non-English speaking.
We employ more than 400 certificated employees (teachers and managers) and approximately 300 service employees, including management-level staff. Our projected operating budget exceeds $65 million. The Hueneme ESD Board of Education is pleased to be able to offer our teachers one of the best salary and benefits packages in Ventura County.
Our teachers work very hard to improve the performance of our students and their efforts are paying off. Our standardized test scores improve every year.
We invite you to visit our schools to see first-hand the good work being done by the employees of the Hueneme Elementary School District.
